Art Deco architectural sculpture modelled by

Randall,

Art Deco Spandrel Panel Nr. D4-R

Sculpture with the bright gold finish, July 2007.

Below is a photo of my orginal clay model during it's creation stages in
the studio. These clay models are NOT simply molded copies taken off antiques, but were hand sculpted by Randall in the same styles and configurations as 19th century architectural sculptures.

A client commissioned me to create this Art Deco model for their fireplace, and now you can own a cast-stone version of my clay model for your home.

Molds made of my clay models enable clients to purchase interior cast-stone, or exterior concrete casts of my models for wall decoration, garden jewelry, or for incorporating into a brick wall in new construction.

These clay models as can be seen in the above studio photo are obviously NOT simply molded off existing antique pieces, while I do have a few that are, these hand sculpted clay models are created from scratch by Randall in water clay, and take an average of 30 hours to design, set up, layout and model each one.

When completed and dry, the clay models are molded, then interior cast-stone as well as concrete casts are available for clients to purchase.

The first interior cast-stone panel.
This has a tint base for the metallic bright gold finish.

Fans of Art Deco may have seen the monumental sized sculpture on the facade of the Folies Bergere in Paris France from 1925 by Maurice Picaud (Pico) there are also some carved wood smaller versions of this in the lobby. The wood carvings differ slightly from the exterior sculpture, and from one another.

Folies Bergere was a very ornate lavishly decorated opera house originally and is a live theater today. Pronunciation; faw-lee ber-zher

Around 1920, a number of plaster casts were made from one of the wood lobby panels in the Folies Bergere and made available to patrons of the theater. Typically when they are found in antique stores, they were painted with a silver-nickel or a gold colored paint and set in a wood frame 26" square.
These antique casts have appeared on the antiques market selling for very high prices, here is a screen shot of an ad for one at the insane price of $5,040 - imagine that- for a PLASTER plaque!

Folies Bergere plaque

Obviously $5,040 is a bit much for the average homeowner to spend on wall decoration, my version of the Folies Bergere panel is aprox 23" square and quite a bit more affordable.
As a sculptor who specializes in these works I create pieces that will complement your home, garden, or business.

The sculptures are priced at $149 for the interior cast-stone, and $179 in concrete. Keep in mind the exterior concrete version only comes plain or Old Limestone Grey

PLEASE NOTE ON SHIPPING

In reviewing the costs for having cardboard boxes made for this that are large enough to ship safely- 30" X 10 X 10" - I find the flat bundle of boxes is too large to ship to me UPS. As the custom made boxes would run around $8 each plus shipping, I decided on larger panels such as this I will build 1/2" thick plywood CRATES to ship which will be far safer and only cost a few dollars more.

The shipping charge is broken down as;

Build plywood crate, materials; 1/2 sheet plywood- $20
Shipping flat rate (interior cast-stone ONLY), anywhere in the lower 48 states, this includes a $6 surcharge they bill shippers for any shipment not in a carboard container; $30

TOTAL shipping charge is; $50
I use DHL ground service for all shipments in the lower 48 states.

QUESTION: Aren't these too heavy for my plasterboard wall Randall?

By no means! keep in mind- your walls weigh thousands of pounds and support the roof, they are built to support weight.

HOWEVER- do not use plastic or self adhesive picture hangars of any kind, or try to simply put a screw into the thin sheetrock- these will not hold and are not designed to.

The key is to install your mounting hooks or other hangars into the solid wood STUD inside the wall, these are typically spaced 16" center to center around the room. You should use an anchor rated to hold at least twice the shipping weight of the sculpture.

To show proof of what a sheetrock wall can hold, here is a photo of two shelves I installed on my bedroom wall for original sculptures that I couldn't mount any other way, the brackets are screwed into the wall studs with 3" screws and there are two heavy angle irons 5/16" thick steel behind the shelves that are invisible.

Total weight for the stone and terra-cotta shown- the top shelf is 175# and 125# for the lower shelf- 300# total;

Here is one more photo, three of my casts shown mounted on another wall in the bedroom- Art Deco D3-R, Nr 649-R Pan center, and Nr. 120-R "Elizabeth" panel- these are likewise installed with hangars screwed into the solid wood STUDS on the sheetrock wall- 150# approximately;

New designs

The clay models that can be seen by the work in progress photos on a growing number of my store pages such as 120-R "Elizabeth" Webster Hall Griffin, Nr 202-R girl keystone, Griffin panel Nr SH-R etc are obviously NOT simply molded off existing antique pieces, these hand sculpted models are created from scratch by Randall in water clay, and typically take an average of 30 hours to set up, layout and model each.

When the clay models are molded here with high quality silicone, interior cast-stone as well as concrete casts are available for clients to purchase. The mold making process usually destroys the unfired clay model.

Instead of moulding existing antiques which are limited to what happens to be for sale at a given time at antique and salvage firms, costly to purchase, typically fairly large in scale (meant to be seen from the street 5 floors below) and are more difficult to display in today's smaller homes and apartments; The Lost New York City Collection has been rapidly expanding into creating brand new original models based on authentic 19th century and early 20th century Victorian and Art Deco architectural sculptures. While I do have a small number of direct molded pieces, these are being phased out over time in favor of creating my own original models. There are some 15 designs created by Randall in the last year all in the authentic looking Victorian and Art Deco styles used on these unique 19th and early 20th century buildings.
