Square grotesque, terra cotta, from 5th floor.
Photo of Athena keystone on the floor around 1982, sold later with the rest of the collection, now 27 years later I find 2 of them at an auction in Philly and won the bid for $600 + premium- $720 for the pair, so I got 2 of these back. The auction place had the age right, they were made in 1901, but they don't depict Mercury! Mercury didn't have long hair, and he was always depicted with the winged feet symbols. Athena however wore such a helmet as depicted.
Unfortunately, poor packing by a UPS Store resulted in both being damaged in shipment, one severely- basically destroyed, the other not as badly.
The keystones were not the greatest quality, not a lot of detailing on them and the surface details there are always seemed to be somewhat crude, and as though the mold used was very worn out.
As was usually the case with these pieces, these were designed and made for this building, and after 40 casts I'm sure the mold was pretty shot. Ive never seen this design on any other building and that's typical with a few exceptions.
I had at least 14 of them, possibly more according to my records, and of the 40 total on the building, 9 were severely damaged by fire and basically destroyed. 7 of them were slightly smaller and had an egg and dart design on it's top cornice, only 1 of those survived the fire.
